Editorial illustration: What is a money mule? Warning signs explained

A money mule is a person used to move money from crime. They may receive it in their bank account, pass it to someone else or use it to buy crypto. Some know what they are doing.

Others believe they are helping an employer or an online partner.

For example, a new online job asks you to receive customer payments. You keep a share and send the rest to another account. The job may be a cover for moving money stolen from someone else.

How do people become money mules?

The request may come through a job advert, social media or a personal contact. It can sound like a small favour: someone says their account is blocked and asks to use yours.

A contract or a familiar profile does not prove the request is safe. The important question is why someone needs your personal account to receive and move their money.

What are the warning signs?

  • The main task is to receive money and quickly send it elsewhere.
  • You are told to keep a percentage as your pay.
  • You must open accounts in your name for someone else to use.
  • The contact asks you to buy crypto or withdraw cash for collection.
  • They pressure you to move the funds before your bank asks questions.

Not every transfer for another person is a crime. But these patterns need care. A successful transfer or a payment into your account does not prove the money came from a lawful source.

What if money has already arrived?

Do not spend it or send it on. Contact your bank or payment provider through its official service. Explain the offer and ask how to handle the funds.

Do not follow the sender's instructions to return the money to a different account. Let your bank guide any return. Keep the job advert, messages and payment records. Report suspected crime to your local police; report threats too.

If you may face legal action, seek advice from a qualified lawyer in your country. A free call with us can help organise your questions, but does not replace legal advice.

What could happen to a money mule?

Moving criminal funds can lead to a frozen or closed account, repayment demands or a criminal investigation. The outcome depends on local law and the facts, including what the person knew or suspected.

It is not safe to assume that being tricked removes every risk.

The same approach can appear in romance scams. Our reporting guide explains how to find the right reporting route.
