A romance scam is a false romantic relationship used to gain trust and take money. It may begin on a dating app or social media.
The person may seem caring and speak to you often. The FBI explains how a false identity can make a request for money feel like helping someone close.
A simple example
Imagine someone you met online says they want to visit. They ask you to pay for a flight. After you send it, a new emergency stops the trip and brings another request.
This is an example of the pattern, not a fixed sequence in every case.
What is the main warning sign?
The relationship becomes a reason to send money or keep a payment secret. Promises to repay you do not prove that the story is true.
Pause before paying someone you know only online. Talk through the request with someone you trust.
Is this the same as an investment scam?
Some romance scams ask for money directly. Others lead you to a trading site. Relationship investment scams can also begin with friendship, without romance.
