A claims route has opened, but a payout has not been promised
Customers of Verus Financial Services Limited, FCA reference 765214, now have a concrete action available: check whether they can submit a compensation claim to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The scheme opened its claims route on 15 October 2026. The FCA drew attention to it again on 29 October.
There is an important difference between accepting an application and deciding to pay it. At the check for this article, FSCS described Verus as under investigation and said claims would not immediately go to its assessment teams. It is establishing whether the conditions for compensation are met. The notice gives no confirmed payment date.
Use the official Verus page on FSCS and its claim button. A call from someone saying that a payment has already been reserved for you is not a substitute for a decision from the scheme.
Why Verus is under scrutiny
Verus was an independent financial adviser. Its work included investments, pensions, mortgages, equity release and insurance. This case concerns that advice business, not every investment product a customer may hold.
The FCA's supervisory notice is dated 24 October 2025. Its December announcement says the notice was issued on 27 October. The action removed Verus's regulatory permissions and tightened restrictions on moving its assets. The FCA described repeated breaches of an earlier asset restriction, failure to comply with an Ombudsman award and a lack of cooperation.
An unpaid award is a concrete customer issue. It does not establish that every client lost money, that every recommendation was unsuitable or that every underlying investment has failed. The FCA specifically separates its restrictions on Verus from the performance of the investments it arranged.
If you still hold an investment or pension, identify its actual provider and keep its statements. A claim about advice and a request to withdraw or transfer an investment are different decisions. Avoid making an irreversible change simply because the adviser is under investigation.
Already complained to the Financial Ombudsman?
The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) may ask permission to transfer your file to FSCS. You still need to make an FSCS claim. Agreeing to a file transfer does not do that automatically.
FSCS says evidence already held on a transferred FOS file does not need to be supplied again. Keep your complaint reference and confirm whether the transfer has happened. If the file has not moved, ask the organisations what they need rather than assuming one has all the other's documents.
For example, a customer might have an Ombudsman reference but no FSCS claim reference. Those are different records. Check both before concluding that the compensation application is underway.
How to prepare a clear application
Gather the advice letter or suitability report, contract, investment or pension statements, charges, payments and relevant correspondence. Add any complaint, final response or Ombudsman decision. Keep originals and make a simple dated list of what was recommended, what you agreed to and why you believe the advice caused a loss.
Distinguish money paid in, money withdrawn, the present value and the loss you are alleging. A fall in market value does not explain by itself what was wrong with the advice. Describe the particular recommendation and its effect on you. Answer the scheme's questions accurately and retain the confirmation of your submission.
This is a UK compensation process. Reading the article in another language or living abroad does not establish eligibility or exclude it; the covered activity, firm and individual claim must be assessed by FSCS. Use the official process for an answer about your case.
The application is free; a recovery fee is not required
You can apply directly without a representative or solicitor. FSCS does not charge to make a claim or receive compensation. Be especially cautious if someone claiming to represent the scheme asks for money to release a payment. Verify unexpected contact through the official FSCS website.
Our guide to recovery offers explains what to check when a third party approaches you after a loss. A private service's invoice is not an FSCS fee, and paying it does not guarantee an award.
If you were a Verus customer and are unsure how the advice, complaint and FSCS application fit together, request a free telephone consultation. We can help you organise the timeline and understand the next questions to ask. FSCS decides eligibility and compensation; our consultation does not replace its application.
