Your savings may be tied up in a fund. Your adviser may no longer be there. It can be hard to know which door to knock on.
For MWL Financial Services clients, three things need to be kept apart: the advice, the fund and a possible compensation claim. Start with the firm named on your advice papers.
What has happened to MWL Financial Services?
MWL Financial Services Pty Ltd is in liquidation. Its Australian credit licence was cancelled on 12 October 2026. Its financial services licence had already been cancelled in August 2025.
ASIC says a CSLR payment of A$90,031.34, including interest, followed an unpaid AFCA decision. That payment was made on 16 September 2026.
It is a confirmed payment in one case, not a payment plan for every client.
The CSLR’s own table also lists one paid MWL claim. Figures in that table are rounded to whole Australian dollars.
Can I still make an AFCA complaint?
ASIC requires MWL to keep its AFCA membership until 12 October 2027. This keeps a route open for complaints. It does not mean every claim will be accepted, or that you should wait until that date.
AFCA is the Australian Financial Complaints Authority. It reviews disputes between clients and financial firms. Check its MWL page for the route that fits your case. The identifiers are AFSL 235096 and AFCA member 11054.
If you already have a case number, keep using it. Send new facts through that case. Explain if money has since been paid or your needs have changed.
What has AFCA found in a real MWL case?
AFCA published an explanation of a lead decision on 16 January 2026. A lead decision helps show how similar issues may be assessed. It does not settle every client’s claim.
The case involved advice to move pension savings into a self-managed fund and put most of them into Shield. AFCA found that the advice was not in the clients’ best interests.
AFCA also recorded MWL’s response. The firm did not dispute that the Shield advice was unsuitable, but disputed how the loss could be worked out while Shield was frozen.
That is the response in this case, not an admission about every client.
Do not assume this decision and the later payment notice concern identical losses. Compare your own advice, dates and records.
Does the CSLR cover all money lost in Shield?
No. The Compensation Scheme of Last Resort covers certain services, including eligible personal financial advice. It does not provide blanket cover for losses in managed investment schemes.
The scheme can pay up to A$150,000 on an eligible claim. This is a limit, not a promised payment.
A claim about bad advice is different from a claim that a fund lost value. An unpaid AFCA award is part of the CSLR route. Other rules also apply.
If an award remains unpaid, tell AFCA and ask about the notice needed for a CSLR claim.
This is why the name on your advice document matters. It may be different from the name of the fund holding your money.
What should I gather now?
Put these records in one folder:
- The advice report and the guide naming the financial firm.
- The risk questions you answered and the goals you gave.
- Statements showing what left your old fund and where it went.
- Emails or notes about why the change was suggested.
- Your latest holdings, payments received and complaint reference.
If a document is missing, note its date and who sent it. Do not guess a figure to fill a gap. Keep money paid in, money received and the latest account value separate.
Write a short account in your own words: “I wanted… I was advised to… I paid… I am now unable to…” This helps explain your case without a long legal letter.
Is a fund payout the same as compensation for advice?
No. A payment from a fund’s winding-up process comes from that process. A complaint about advice asks whether the advice caused a loss. Any money already received matters to the final calculation.
Our Shield payment guide explains the fund route. Keep both sets of records, and tell those handling your claim about other recoveries. Do not count the same loss twice.
Need help working out which route fits?
We can help you understand the names on your papers and organise your next questions. Have your adviser’s name, fund name and complaint status ready. Do not send passwords or full card details.
Discuss my situation — free callback. We can help you understand the process. AFCA and CSLR decide their own cases; a call with us does not secure a payout.
