How did the verification website fit the offer?
The SRA's 14 October 2026 warning describes recovery messages that requested a £2,500 fee plus 2.5% of recovered funds. A recipient was directed to lawsocietywales.com to check the supposed lawyer's credentials.
The regulator says the genuine Janes Solicitors LLP and Simon Matthew Barker have no connection to the reported scheme. The real Law Society website is lawsociety.org.uk. The warning documents a payment demand; it does not confirm that the recipient paid it.
Why checking through the supplied link fails
If the person making an offer also chooses the page that supposedly verifies them, both parts may support the same false story. A name, photo and registration number can be copied without the real person's involvement.
Start again from the professional body's independently found website. Search the full name, compare the office details and contact that office to verify the exact message. Do not let a convincing document replace this check.
What to keep if you received the offer
Save the full email, agreement, payment request and the verification address. Note which document arrived first and who sent the link. That sequence can show how the identity claim supported the request for money.
Do not visit a suggested meeting or send additional documents merely because a caller says funds are ready. Verify the contact independently before taking another step.
If you already paid
Contact the payment provider promptly and explain the suspected impersonation. Ask about the available dispute or recall process for the method you used. Provide the actual recipient account and transaction reference.
Keep the original investment transaction separate from the later recovery fee. If another payment is demanded, preserve that request without sending more money. A refund cannot be guaranteed.
Report suspected fraud through your country's official route and include the fake verification address. If account credentials were shared, secure the relevant account through its genuine provider.
