What did the court order John Burford to pay?

On 27 July 2026, a London court ordered John Burford to pay £655,951.40. The FCA said the funds would go to victims of his investment fraud.

The amount reflected the assets the court found available to recover. This was a confiscation order: a court demand to repay money linked to crime.

Burford was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2025. The FCA says he defrauded more than 100 investors out of £1 million.

How did the investment fraud work?

Burford sold trade alerts and offered managed funds without FCA authorisation. He hid losses, misled people about results and used their money for himself.

The case shows why a convincing person and a record of claimed profits are not enough. Check who is allowed to handle your money and what that permission covers.

Have victims already received all their money?

The July notice does not confirm completed payments. It says the order, together with earlier repayments, was expected to return about 99% of the original money to roughly 70 known victims.

That figure concerns this group in this case. It is not a recovery rate for investment fraud in general.

The notice gave Burford three months to pay. We found no later official confirmation of full payment in our checks. Do not treat the order as proof that your own payment has arrived.

What should affected investors do?

  1. Keep your payment records, investment papers and case reference together.
  2. Contact the official team already handling your case. Ask whether your details are correct and what stage the payment has reached.
  3. Confirm any request to change bank details through a contact you have checked separately.
  4. Do not pay a stranger who claims a fee will release court funds. Verify the request first.
  5. If you have just sent money to a suspected scammer, contact your bank or payment service promptly. Ask what steps are still available.

For a different scheme, use our guide to reporting a scam. This UK court order does not create a claim for victims of other firms.
