You join a group for stock tips. An expert posts winning trades. Other members praise the results. An assistant then asks you to open an account on a trading site.
Before sending money, check who runs that site. A busy group and a famous name do not prove that the investment is real.
What should you do if the group already has your money?
- Stop further payments. Do not pay a new tax or fee under pressure to release your balance.
- Contact the bank or payment service you used promptly. Explain the group, the platform and the payments. Ask what can be stopped, recalled or disputed.
- Save the group name, admin details, website addresses, chats and receipts. For crypto, keep wallet addresses and transaction IDs.
- Report the group in the app and the suspected fraud through the proper route in your country. Keep the report reference.
If you gave someone remote access, disconnect that device from the internet. Contact your bank from another trusted device. Do not let the group “help” with bank security.
How do fake investment groups work?
A social media advert may lead to a WhatsApp or Telegram group. The group offers stock tips, crypto trading or an AI system. It may use the name or photo of a real expert without permission.
The platform can show trades and profit that do not exist. When you ask to withdraw, it demands more money. Australia's Scamwatch described this pattern in a 19 May 2026 warning.
The US CFTC also warns about investment pitches through messaging apps. Promises of huge or guaranteed returns deserve particular caution. CFTC guidance.
This does not mean every investment discussion group is fraudulent. The question is whether you can verify the people, firm and service outside the group.
How do you check the expert and trading platform?
Start with the exact website. Save the full address. Similar names can belong to different businesses. A criminal may copy the name of a real firm.
Find the legal business behind it. Ask for the full name and the country in which it claims permission to operate. A business registration alone is not a licence to offer every financial service.
Check the relevant official register. Match the website and contact details, not just the name. Check what services the entry covers. Use our broker licence guide.
Contact the real firm independently. Use details from the official register or a separately verified website. Ask whether the group, app and named adviser belong to it.
Check the reach of the permission. Permission in one country does not automatically cover your country or your product. A logo saying “regulated” does not settle this.
Why are the group's reviews and profit pictures not enough?
A picture shows what someone wants you to see. It does not show who controls the money or whether the balance can be withdrawn.
Treat claims inside the group as claims, not checks. Ask for evidence you can verify without the admin's help. A video or famous face also needs checking; see what a deepfake is.
Do not make a larger deposit just to test the group. That puts more of your money at risk.
What if they demand a tax or withdrawal fee?
Ask for the reason in writing. Keep the demand and payment address. Do not pay while checking it with an independent source.
Real firms can have fees and checks. But a new payment to an unknown wallet is not proof of a real tax bill. A fake platform can invent both the balance and the charge.
Our blocked withdrawal guide explains how to separate a delay, a dispute and signs of fraud.
What changes if you live in another country?
The checks above travel well. Refund rights, complaint routes and deadlines do not. Record your country, the firm's claimed location, payment method and currency separately.
Use our reporting guide for country-specific routes. Neither the group's language nor a phone dial code tells you which rules protect you. Reporting may help an investigation; it does not guarantee repayment.
